Volvo not gunning after BMW 7-Series or Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Despite an earlier statement to the contrary, Geely Holding will not be pursuing a Volvo sedan to compete with the S-class and 7-series sedans. Right after purchasing the Swedish automaker from Ford last August, Geely CEO Li Shufu said that Volvo would develop such a vehicle.

“Mr. Shufu expressed a vision of where he would like Volvo to be in the future, and that vision includes a 7-Series and S-Class rival,” Volvo Cars CEO Stefan Jacoby said in an e-mail to Automotive News. “However, short- or mid-term, Volvo Cars does not have such a model in the product plan.”

Such a move by Volvo would necessitate a dramatic price increase for the brand, whose largest sedan, the 2011 S80 3.2, carries a U.S. starting MSRP of $37,800 after freight. The lowest priced S-Class sedan, the S400 hybrid, starts at $88,825 after freight and the lowest priced BMW 7-series comes in at $71,525.
